Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players go national
After successfully winning over haughty New York City audiences, the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players have embarked on their inaugural headlining tour.
The Trachtenburgs--Jason Trachtenburg on keyboards and vocals, wife Tina Piņa Trachtenburg on vintage carousel slide projector and their 9-year-old daughter Rachel Piņa Trachtenburg on drums--have developed a unique show that combines music (often containing lyrics with a leftist bent), a slide show (based on discarded slide collections found at flea markets and garage sales) and mom's baked cookies.
The group's music is often inspired by the slides--among them, a six-song rock opera titled "OPNAD Contribution Study Committee Report, June 1977" that was inspired by "rejects from a McDonald's corporate meeting," according to a press release.
"We're an authentic family band that writes pop songs set to vintage slides about real people," Jason said in the press release. "We're fully prepared to bring our indie vaudeville art on the road, and we're ready to entertain."
Langhorne Slim will open on the tour, which runs through July and focuses on the club circuit.
The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players first went on tour as the opening act for They Might Be Giants in the fall of 2002. Since then, they have been playing several gigs a week in and around New York City.
The unsigned band has appeared on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and has been the subject of recent features in Spin, Entertainment Weekly, the New Yorker, the Village Voice, the New York Post and Time Out New York, among others. The whole family was recently interviewed for a lengthy feature on National Public Radio's Weekend Edition.
