Mariah Carey launches world tour in June

Pop singer Mariah Carey , looking to build momentum for her 2002 album "Charmbracelet," is taking her show on the road this summer for the first time in three years.

The tour gets underway on June 24 in Osaka, Japan, and touches down in North America in July. It will visit Asia and Europe before concluding in November.

Starting on May 5, members of Carey's fan club will get the first shot at tickets; details about the pre-sale are available at her official website. Tickets are expected to go on sale to the general public shortly after the pre-sale, but on-sale dates couldn't be confirmed at press time.

Carey is scheduled to perform live on the Today Show on May 9 as part of the morning program's annual concert series. And on June 1--in celebration of New York radio station Z100's 20th anniversary --she will be on the bill of Z100's the station's Zootopia concert at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

Reuters recently reported that Carey had been scheduled to play a June 11 concert in Singapore, but has postponed the date due to fears about the spread of the SARS virus in Asia. She reportedly is expected to reschedule the concert for early July--before her tour visits Japan--or after her European tour.

"Charmbracelet" has sold more than a million copies since its December release, according to industry sources.

Carey took a nearly $30 million buyout to part with Virgin Records in January of 2002 after her first album for the label, "Glitter," sold poorly and a Carey-starring motion picture of the same name flopped. She quickly signed a new deal with Island, and "Charmbracelet" is her first release for the label.

Carey was hospitalized in 2001, just prior to the release of the "Glitter" album and movie, after suffering what her publicist termed "an emotional and physical breakdown."
