ZZ Top brings Ted Nugent, Kenny Wayne Shepherd on tour
Ted Nugent and Kenny Wayne Shepherd have signed on to join ZZ Top during the Texas trio's spring tour behind its new album.
Dubbed the "Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers Tour," the outing kicks off on April 25. Nugent and Shepherd--the latter of whom will be backed by the late Stevie Ray Vaughn's former rhythm section Double Trouble--will rotate show-opener duties during the first few dates, but most of the shows will feature all three acts.
The specific lineup for each show is posted at ZZ Top's official website.
Titled "Mescalero," ZZ Top's latest release is the group's first new studio set since 1999's "XXX." The album clocks in at just over an hour and features 15 original tracks, as well as the group's rendition of the 1967 Otis Redding and Carla Thomas duet "Tramp."
"The album has some of that old ZZ sound," guitarist Billy Gibbons said in a statement. "It's the same three guys playing the same three chords but we've gone in some new directions with them."
Bassist Dusty Hill added: "You'll know it's ZZ Top right away but we've kept it interesting and fresh."
ZZ Top--Gibbons, Hill and drummer Frank Beard--formed in Houston in 1970. The group gained widespread commercial appeal with its 1983 album "Eliminator" and its 1985 set "Afterburner," which collectively spawned a slew of hits such as "Legs," "Sharp Dressed Man," "Sleeping Bag," "Velcro Fly" and more.
Nugent's most recent album is last September's "Craveman," which marks his first release on Spitfire Records. The Detroit-based rocker is also supporting last month's "Full Bluntal Nugity," a concert DVD recorded in front of a hometown crowd at Detroit's DTE Energy Music Theatre. The disc also includes bonus footage culled from throughout Nugent's career.
Shepherd hasn't released a new album since 1999's "Live On," which is his third studio set.
