Chris Cornell To Open North American Tour In Atlanta

Former Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell will follow up the brief European leg of his current tour with a month of theater performances in North America. He is supporting his first solo album, "Euphoria Morning" (A&M).

The tour's North American leg opens Nov. 10 at The Tabernacle in Atlanta, and is scheduled to visit 16 major-market cities by Dec. 7. Cornell is also scheduled to squeeze in an appearance on ''The Late Show with David Letterman'' on Nov. 15.

Cornell's touring band includes keyboardist Natasha Shneider and guitarist Alain Johannes, two members of the Los Angeles band Eleven . The pair also had a hand in the writing and production of ''Euphoria Morning.''

At least in the early stage, the sales numbers for ''Euphoria Morning'' aren't living up to the high standard set by grunge band Soundgarden. The album has only made it as high as No. 18 the chart since its Sept.21 release, and it has since drifted down to #65. Nevertheless, rock and alternative radio continue to give solid support to the album's first single, ''Can't Change Me.''

Soundgarden's 1994 album ''Superunknown'' hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart in 1994, thanks to the hit single ''Black Hole Sun.'' The follow-up album, ''Down On The Upside,'' hit No. 2 on the chart.

Soundgarden disbanded in 1997. In a record company biography, Cornell said success played a large part in Soundgarden's break-up.

''A large part was that we were so self-contained in the beginning, I don't think we ever really adjusted to the success part of it,'' he said.

Cornell and band are expected to tour extensively in 2000.
