Blue Man Group takes the show on the road
Popular off-Broadway outfit Blue Man Group is making a foray into the rock-and-roll world with a forthcoming album and supporting tour.
"The Complex," Blue Man Group's first rock album, is due out on April 22. The trio--Matt Goldman, Phil Stanton and Chris Wink--recorded the set at their New York facility, and used a number of instruments of their own invention. The album features guest appearances from Dave Matthews, Tracy Bonham, Josh Haden, Esthero, Dan the Automator and others.
During the recording process, the group simultaneously created a "superior concert event that will correspond to the album," according to a press release.
"Our concept from the beginning was to make a record that would fuel a groundbreaking rock concert experience," Wink said in a statement.
"It's been a while since music fans have been given an album that was linked to a visceral, over-the-top, rock concert event, on par with that of a Pink Floyd," Goldman added. "It may sound presumptuous, but our approach has always been to aim high, so this is the level we are shooting for."
The group teamed with production designer Marc Brickman--who has previously worked with Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney, Genesis and Nine Inch Nails-- to create their touring stage set. The production will "combine elements of performance art, rave culture and rock," a press release said.
Blue Man Group launches the tour on May 18 in Washington, D.C., but will test drive the production during its April 26 and 27 performance at the Coachella festival in Indio, Calif.
