Major acts voice opposition to war in new songs
R.E.M. and ex-Rage Against the Machine frontman Zack de la Rocha are the latest artists to express their opposition to the United States' Iraq policy by posting new anti-war songs on the Internet. This month has also seen the Internet release of anti-war songs by the Beastie Boys and John Mellencamp .
R.E.M.'s song, a lo-fi acoustic track titled "The Final Straw," is currently streaming at the band's official website. "Now I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right," Michael Stipe sings, apparently directing his ire toward the U.S. government. "If the world were filled with the likes of you, then I'm putting up a fight."
De la Rocha, who has always been an outspoken critic of U.S. government policy, teamed with DJ Shadow for an anti-war track titled "March of Death," which is available at a website that was established by de la Rocha.
In a message posted on the site, de la Rocha wrote: "Lies, sanctions and cruise missiles have never created a free and just society. Only everyday people can do that. Which is why I'm joining the millions worldwide who have stood up to oppose the Bush administration's attempt to expand the U.S. empire at the expense of human rights at home and abroad."
Earlier this month, the Beastie Boys ended a five-year recording hiatus and released a new song titled "In a World Gone Mad" via their official website. "This song is not an anti-American or pro-Saddam Hussein statement," group member Adam Horovitz said in a statement. "This is a statement against an unjustified war."
And John Mellencamp recently added his two cents with the Woody Guthrie-inspired song "To Washington," available as a free download from his official website. Among the song's lyrics: "And he wants to fight with many / And he says it's not for oil / He sent out the National Guard / To police the world / From Baghdad to Washington."
