The Flaming Lips celebrate first GRAMMY with spring tour
The Flaming Lips , who picked up a freshly-minted GRAMMY® award earlier this month, have lined up their latest round of North American tour dates.
The band continues to tour behind its 2002 album, "Yoshimi vs. the Pink Robots," which ranked at No. 3 on the Village Voice's annual Pazz & Jop list, a survey of nearly 700 critics. The album track "Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon (Utopia Planitia)" won a GRAMMY--the band's first--in the Rock Instrumental Performance category.
Led by frontman Wayne Coyne, the Flaming Lips have issued 11 albums--including a compilation--over the last two decades. The band's sound has become less guitar-oriented and more keyboard-driven in recent years, but its live stage production remains one of the most unusual in rock.
Last year, huge rotating mirror balls and a projection screen graced the stage, along with the band's trademark costumed characters, confetti and puppets. If the past is a guide, concert-goers can expect to see stage blood gushing from Coyne's forehead at some point during each show.
In a unique 2002 set-up, the Lips were the opening act on a series of Beck 's tour dates, and did double-duty by serving as Beck's backing band as well.
