Neil Diamond pushes tour into 2002

Neil Diamond ’s year is ending with a New Year’s Eve show in Las Vegas, but his tour won’t stop there. The veteran singer has added a new round of dates to the run that will put him back on the road in February.

Diamond’s new 2002 tour plans will see his latest outing make its first stops in Florida, Texas, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and upstate New York. An online pre-sale for tickets to eight of the new dates will kick off on Saturday (11/24); users must register in advance for a shot at those tickets, according to the pre-sale website.

Tickets for those same eight dates are scheduled to go on sale to the general public on Dec. 3. Details appear in the itinerary below.

Also on Saturday (11/24), A&E will be rebroadcasting Neil Diamond ’s July performance on the channel’s “Live by Request” program, according to Diamond’s official website.

Diamond is on tour to support his first album of new material in five years, "Three Chord Opera” (Columbia), which was produced by Peter Asher (Cher, Linda Ronstadt, Sarah Brightman) and Alan Lindgren (whom Diamond has often enlisted as a keyboardist and arranger). The album surfaced in July and entered the Billboard 200 album chart at No. 15. It remained on that weekly chart for three months.

Though Diamond’s popularity on the album and singles charts has waned over the years, he remains a top draw on the concert circuit. His latest jaunt is the No. 2 high-grossing tour on Pollstar’s Nov. 23 Pulse chart, on which it is bested only by U2's current North American outing. According to the chart, Diamond’s last 15 stops have each sold an average of about 23,000 tickets and have each grossed an average of about $1.36 million.

Diamond’s tour continues on Tuesday night (11/20) in Nashville, and will make multi-night stops in Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles and Las Vegas by year’s end.
