Alicia Keys nabs five American Music Awards nominations
R&B singer Alicia Keys , whose debut album has sold more than 3 million copies, picked up nominations in five categories to lead the field of nominees for the 29th American Music Awards.
The 20-year-old artist was nominated for Favorite New Artist and Favorite Female Artist in both the pop/rock and soul/rhythm & blues categories. No other artist or act received more than two nominations.
Garnering two nominations each were the late Aaliyah , Brooks & Dunn, Destiny's Child, Janet Jackson, R. Kelly, Lonestar, Dave Matthews Band, Tim McGraw, 'NSync and Shaggy.
Organizers compile the list of nominees based upon retail sales and radio airplay. Winners are determined by a survey of about 20,000 Americans.
The awards ceremony will take place on Jan. 9 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. ABC-TV will broadcast the event.
