Briefly: No Doubt, Garbage to open on new U2 dates
plus: George Harrison reportedly hospitalized in New York. Keb' Mo' to open for Garth Brooks . Britney Spears concert on armed forces radio and TV. Military may use music-sharing technology.
U2 has announced the opening acts for the eight dates that were recently added to the band's Elevation tour. No Doubt will support in Sacramento, Calif., Phoenix and Dallas, and Garbage will support in Kansas City, St. Louis, Atlanta, Tampa and Miami.
The New York Daily News, quoting unnamed sources, reported that former Beatle George Harrison was in a Staten Island, N.Y., hospital on Thursday night (11/8) for treatment of brain cancer. He reportedly is undergoing a special radiation therapy.
A British tabloid first reported Harrison's hospitalization earlier this week, but no official statement has been issued as to Harrison's condition--or even if he is hospitalized.
In July, British tabloids reported that Harrison was near death. Harrison issued a statement shortly after the stories surfaced: "I am feeling fine, and I am really sorry for the unnecessary worry," he said.
Contemporary bluesman Keb' Mo' will appear as the special guest of Garth Brooks at Brooks' Wednesday (11/14) appearance at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood, Calif.
Keb' Mo' is also scheduled to appear with Jackson Browne at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles on Nov. 17. The performance will benefit Friends of the Washington Prep Foundation, which supports L.A.'s Washington High School music program.
Britney Spears' Nov. 18 HBO concert will be aired simultaneously on armed forces radio and TV.
According to the Washington Post, an assistant to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff told "technologists at an industry conference in Washington this week" that peer-to-peer technology--the technology that fuels most music file-sharing websites--could be used by the military.
The assistant "said the technology might help the military share information on the fly across its many branches, agencies, ships, airplanes, tanks and ground troops ..."
To demonstrate his point, he told of how, during the Kosovo conflict, "the targets were able to move faster than their attackers after the enemy apparently intercepted their radio talk."
