Sammy Hagar invites Godsmack, Nickelback, Jerry Cantrell to Birthday Bash
update: Sammy Hagar 's annual October Birthday Bash--which, in the past, has been a relatively unpublicized, fan-oriented happening--will assume a higher profile this year with the addition of Godsmack , Nickelback and Jerry Cantrell to the bill. As always, the multi-day event will be held at Hagar's Mexican nightclub, the Cabo Wabo Cantina.
The celebration is set to begin with performances by Hagar and his band, the Waboritas, on Oct. 10 and 11, according to Hagar's manager. A two-day event dubbed the Mexican Meltdown is then scheduled to take place as part of the Birthday Bash, and will feature a performance from Godsmack on Oct. 12, and performances from both Nickelback and Hagar on Oct. 13, the singer's 54th birthday.
Guitarist Jerry Cantrell, founding member of Alice in Chains, will join Hagar on stage at the Oct. 13 show for a jam session that will include songs from Alice in Chains, Led Zeppelin and Hagar’s ‘70s-era act Montrose, according to Hagar’s manager.
Both the Oct. 12 and Oct. 13 performances will be free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. The Cabo Wabo Cantina holds about 875 people.
Hagar's most recent release is last October's "Ten 13" (Cabo Wabo/Beyond), so named for his Oct. 13 birthday. The singer wrapped up a tour in support of the album earlier this year, but is currently back on the road playing a short series of U.S. dates.
Godsmack is in the midst of the latest round of dates behind its platinum-selling sophomore release, "Awake" (Universal), which also hit stores last October.
Nickelback's sophomore album, "Silver Side Up" (Roadrunner), is due out on Sept. 11. The album features the group's current hit, "How You Remind Me," which sits at No. 2 on Billboard's latest Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
Cantrell released a solo album titled “Boggy Depot” on Columbia Records in 1998, and the label issued an Alice in Chains “Greatest Hits” collection last month.
Located in the resort town of Cabo San Lucas--a former fishing village that sits at the tip of the Baja Peninsula--Hagar opened the Cabo Wabo Cantina with Van Halen in 1990; at that time, Hagar was fronting Van Halen. The club gets its name from the Van Halen song "Cabo Wabo," featured on the 1988 album "OU812."
Also named after the song is Hagar's successful brand of tequila, which was originally served exclusively at the Cabo Wabo Cantina, but is now distributed commercially in the United States. The tequila company is giving away 15 trips to the Mexican Meltdown, according to the official Cabo Wabo website.
Radio stations throughout the U.S are also holding contests for trips to the event.
