Weezer confirms tour dates, selects fill-in bassist

Weezer has selected a bassist to fill in for Mikey Welsh, and will go forward with tour plans that had been uncertain.

The tour is scheduled to get underway on Sept. 11 in San Jose, Calif. After taking a short time to audition a temporary replacement for Welsh, the band has settled on Scott Shriner, according to the band's official website. Shriner plays in the Los Angeles rock band Broken.

Last week, in a posting on the Weezer site, webmaster Karl Koch said that Welsh checked into a psychiatric hospital, possibly in his hometown in Boston. The band still has little information regarding Welsh's condition, according to Koch.

The band became concerned when Welsh missed a red-eye flight from Boston to Los Angeles last week, according to a posting to the website. He was absent from the taping of a second version of the band's "Island in the Sun" video, with Spike Jonze directing.

Cold has been tabbed as the tour's opening act. The band supporting its sophomore release, "13 Ways to Bleed On Stage."

Weezer is expected to tour Europe in October.
