Tour by Brecker, Hancock and Hargrove salutes John Coltrane, Miles Davis
Saxophonist Michael Brecker , keyboardist Herbie Hancock and trumpeter Roy Hargrove will embark on a 28-city North American tour in September to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the births of jazz legends John Coltrane and Miles Davis .
Brecker, Hancock and Hargrove will lead a quintet "performing the music of, and compositions inspired by, both Coltrane and Davis," Verve Records announced. The tour--dubbed "Directions in Music"--runs through October. On Sept. 28--the 10th anniversary of Davis' death--the tour will visit St. Louis, where Davis grew up.
Hancock, a seven-time Grammy winner, got his start in the '60s, and came to international attention early on as a sideman in Davis' group. He will release a new album titled "Future2Future" on Transparent Music, a new label venture in which he is a partner, on Sept. 25.
The latest release from Brecker, a highly influential contemporary player who also has seven Grammys to his name, is "Nearness of You: The Ballad Book" (Verve), which features Hancock, Pat Metheny and James Taylor (on a remake of his hit "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight").
Hargrove, who was sitting in with Wynton Marsalis' band when he was still a high school student, released a collection of ballads titled "Moment to Moment" (Verve) in 2000. His trumpet can also be heard on last year's D'Angelo album, "Voodoo" (Virgin).
Davis' 1959 album "Kind of Blue" (Columbia)--which features Coltrane--is the best-selling jazz album of all time.
