George Harrison denies reports of his imminent death
George Harrison has denied a recent flurry of rumors and reports indicating that his death is imminent, according to Reuters. The former Beatle has also said that renowned Beatles producer George Martin, whom a London newspaper quoted on Sunday (7/22) as saying that Harrison “knows that he is going to die soon,” has denied giving any such interview.
A statement that Harrison and his wife issued on Monday (7/23) reads that “reports [of his impending death] were unsubstantiated, untrue ... Mr. Harrison is active and feeling very well in spite of the health challenges he has had this year," Reuters reported.
Martin--frequently referred to as the fifth Beatle--was quoted in Sunday’s (7/22) edition of the London newspaper the Mail as saying that Harrison “is taking it easy and hoping that the thing will go away. He has an indomitable spirit but he knows that he is going to die soon and he is accepting that.''
Harrison’s subsequent Monday statement claims that Martin “has emphatically denied speaking to any newspaper.''
Monday’s statement was the second release that Harrison has issued this month. Earlier this month, reports surfaced that he had undergone treatment for a brain tumor. Harrison responded to the media-frenzy that ensued by issuing a statement in which he said that he had received radiotherapy treatments in Switzerland in June, but was “feeling fine.” The statement did not specify if, in fact, he was being treated for a brain tumor.
In early May, Harrison had a cancerous growth removed from one of his lungs. He was also treated for throat cancer in the late ‘90s.
In December of 1999, Harrison suffered a collapsed right lung when an intruder entered his home and stabbed him.
