Charts: D12 takes No. 1, four others debut in Top 10
Eminem ’s pet-project D12 will see its first album, “Devil’s Night,” debut at the top of the forthcoming Billboard 200 album chart after selling almost 372,000 copies during its first week out, according to industry sources. “Devil’s Night” leads a pack of Top 10 debuts that also includes the latest from Luther Vandross , Sisqo , Stone Temple Pilots and 311 .
Released on Eminem’s new Records Shady label--an Interscope imprint--“Devil’s Night” features the track “Purple Pills” ("Purple Hills" on the "clean" version). "Purple Hills" is currently at No. 11 on Billboard’s Rhythmic Top 40 singles chart.
The first week sales performance “Devil’s Night” was no doubt helped by the success of Eminem ’s most recent solo effort, last year’s “The Marshall Mathers LP.” The disc was one of the best-selling albums of 2000, and moved 1.76 million copies in its first week out last May.
Staind’s “Break the Cycle” (Flip), which dipped to No. 2 last week after a three-week reign in the top slot, stays put this week, and is followed by blink-182’s “Take Off Your Pants and Jacket” (MCA), which debuted at No. 1 last week. Both groups have singles riding Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart, with Staind’s “It’s Been Awhile” at No. 1 and blink-182’s “Rock Show” at No. 3.
Dipping one spot each from last week is Destiny’s Child’s “Survivor” (Columbia) and the “Moulin Rouge” soundtrack (Interscope), which now occupy the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, respectively.
Debuting at No. 6 this week is the latest, eponymous release from Luther Vandross (J Records), who has scored a hit with the album’s single “Take You Out.” The track is currently topping trade publication Radio & Records’ Urban AC Chart, which measures national radio airplay.
Right behind Vandross is the No. 7 debut of Sisqo ’s sophomore solo effort, “Return of the Dragon” (Def Jam), which features "Dance With Me," the No. 17 song on Billboard’s latest Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart.
“Free City” (Universal), the debut from the Nelly-led St. Louis rap act St. Lunatics, dips another three spots to No. 8 this week, and is followed by the No. 9 debut of Stone Temple Pilots ’ “Shangri-La Dee Da” (Atlantic). The latter album features the quartet’s current rock-radio hit, “Days of the Week,” which is the No. 1 track on Billboard’s current Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart.
Closing out the Top 10 is the No. 10 debut of 311 ’s “From Chaos” (Volcano). The album’s first single, “You Wouldn’t Believe,” clocks in at No. 10 on Radio & Records’ Alternative chart.
Further down the chart, Ray J’s “This Ain’t a Game” (Atlantic) debuts at No. 21; self-titled releases from both Mandy Moore and Gorillaz enter at Nos. 35 and 39, respectively; the “Baby Boy” soundtrack (Universal) clocks in at No. 47; and Widespread Panic’s “Don’t Tell the Band” (Santuary) logs in at No. 57.
