Papa Roach has something to prove
Grammy nominee Papa Roach is making the most of its summer with Ozzfest by spending its free time working on the follow-up to its debut album, "Infest."
"Right now, we have so many different [ideas] that its all over the place," said drummer Dave Buckner. "It still sounds like us, but its hard to nail it down. Its going to be hard to decide what we want this record to be. ... We have everything from really mellow stuff to electronic stuff to good old rock and roll. And our style of rock--real heavy, jump-up-and-down kind of stuff--theres going to be some of that on the next record. You cant have a P. Roach record and not have stuff that you can bob your head to or jump up and down to at the show."
Prior to its set during the opening day of Ozzfest on Friday (6/8) at the Tweeter Center in Tinley Park, Ill., Papa Roach met with a specialist in Pro Tools recording software--which the band is using to record its album--to work out "a few technical bugs and show us how to work the program smoother," according to Buckner. He expects the album to hit stores next summer.
Ozzfest is the third major U.S. tour that Papa Roach has played since "Infest" (DreamWorks) hit stores in April 2000. Buckner has a logical explanation for the band's participation in the Anger Management tour and the Warped Tour.
"We got lucky, I guess," Buckner said with a laugh.
He explained that the Papa Roachs goal for Ozzfest is to prove that the band is for real.
"We have our fans," he said, "but there are some people who are going to be at Ozzfest who havent had the chance to see us live, or maybe dont really know what were about. Some people think were just an MTV band. They have no idea that were a real rock band. Thats one thing that were out to prove this summer. We definitely have our own thing going. Were not a write-off, fly-by-night band."
