Prince to set out on North American tour this week
In contrast to his recent Hit N Run outings--which were characterized by the last-minute announcement of individual performances-- Prince has revealed nearly two months’ worth of summer tour dates. Dubbed “Prince: A Celebration,” the jaunt gets underway this Friday (6/15), following five days of events at the veteran musician’s Paisley Park studios in Minneapolis.
As he did last year, Prince is marking his June 7 birthday by opening Paisley Park Studios to the public for a week-long gala of tours and nightly concerts that begin on Monday (6/11) and run through next Sunday (6/17). Nightly performers include acts such as the Time and Erykah Badu. Detailed information about the festivities can be found at Prince’s official website.
Later this week, Prince will kick off his summer run with a two-night stand at St. Paul's Xcel Energy Center on Friday and Saturday nights (6/15-16). From there, he will set out on a tour of North American arenas that is currently scheduled to run through early August.
In addition to his upcoming series of headlining dates, Prince is slated to appear on NBC’s “The Today Show” on June 22, and will also perform as part of this year’s Montreal Jazz Festival on July 6.
“The Rainbow Children,” Prince’s next album, is due out sometime this year, though no release date has been announced. Earlier this year, Prince launched his own subscription-based online music service, NPG Music Club, through which he is now distributing his own music without record-label involvement.
