Madonna concert to air on HBO; three albums reissued
HBO has nabbed the rights to broadcast the Detroit-area stop on Madonna 's upcoming world tour. The program, dubbed "Madonna Live: The Drowned World Tour," will air at 9 p.m. Eastern Time on Aug. 26, according to the cable network.
The concert will be broadcast from the Palace of Auburn Hills in Michigan. The Detroit suburb of Auburn Hills neighbors Rochester, Mich., where Madonna grew up.
The Madonna Drowned World Tour, in support of her 2000 release "Music" (Maverick) is the singer's first outing in eight years. Fourteen shows have gone on sale for the tour's North American leg, and all have sold out. In response to strong demand, promoter SFX Entertainment recently added extra shows in New York and Los Angeles.
HBO has previously aired two Madonna concert specials: "Madonna--Live Down Under: The Girlie Show" in 1993, and "Madonna--Live! Blonde Ambition World Tour '90" in 1990. The latter one once held the title as HBO's most-watched original program.
HBO's parent company, AOL Time Warner, is tightly aligned with Madonna and her tour. AOL is sponsoring the outing, and her label, Maverick, is distributed by Warner Bros.
In other Madonna news, Warner Bros. Records announced this week that it is releasing re-mastered versions of the singer's first three albums on CD: "Madonna," "Like a Virgin" and "True Blue." Each CD will feature two bonus cuts "of long sought-after dance remixes, never before available on the original albums," according to the label. The CDs hit stores on May 22.
