Robert Cray maps U.S. tour to back forthcoming album

update: Bluesman Robert Cray is gearing up for a summer tour of U.S. theaters and festivals in support of his forthcoming album, “Shoulda Been Home.” The outing gets underway on May 15, the same day that the album is due to arrive in stores.

A month-long tour of Europe is also slated, with dates set from late-June through late-July.

Cray talked about the recording process for “Shoulda Been Home” (Rykodisc) in the press release.

"We made this record in the tradition of how people used to record,” he said. “We had the songs written before we began recording and the sessions had a nice flow. We play live in the studio and it's like we're reproducing what we do onstage. This album really shows what we can do as a band."

“Shoulda Been Home,” Cray’s 12th album, is the follow-up to 1999’s “Take Your Shoes Off.” The latter release won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album at the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards.

Cray’s most commercially successful album to date is his 1986 double-platinum release “Strong Persuader” (Mercury). That album features his breakthrough hit, “Smoking Gun.”
