Charts: Posthumous Tupac release takes No. 1 spot

“Until the End of Time,” a compilation of previously unreleased works from the late Tupac Shakur, storms onto the charts in the top slot this week. The album easily ousts Shaggy’s “Hotshot,” which had reigned at No. 1 for the past two weeks.

Featuring a total of 29 tracks, the 2-CD set “Until the End of Time” (Interscope) sold more than 420,000 copies in its first week out, according to industry sources. It is the fourth compilation of Shakur’s material that has been released since he was murdered in 1996.

The chart-topping debut from Shakur knocks “Hotshot” (MCA) to No. 2 this week with sales of around 175,000 copies. The disc, which has been on the charts for 34 weeks, has spent a total of six weeks at No. 1.

Staying put at No. 3 this week is Dave Matthews Band’s “Everyday” (RCA). The disc is followed by 112’s “Part III” (Bad Boy/Arista), which drops two spots from No. 2 last week.

Dido’s “No Angel” (Arista) continues to knock its way around the Top 10, and bounces up two spots to No. 5 this week. “Thank You,” the album’s breakthrough single--a sample of which is featured in Eminem’s hit single “Stan”--has spent the past several weeks in the No. 1 slot on Billboard’s Top 40 Adult singles chart.

San Francisco-based rock quintet Train makes its mark on the charts this week with the No. 6 debut of its sophomore release, “Drops of Jupiter” (Columbia). The disc is the follow up to the group’s 1998 self-titled debut, which was platinum-certified last year. The new album’s title track is climbing the singles charts, and is up two spots to No. 22 on Billboard’s latest Modern Rock Tracks chart.

Limp Bizkit’s “Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavored Water” is up two spots to No. 7. The album--which returned to the Top 10 two weeks back for the first time since late January--is experiencing a revival on the album chart thanks to the success of its latest single, “My Way." That track is up four spots to No. 8 on trade publication Radio & Records' latest Active Rock national airplay chart.

Trick Daddy’s “Thugs Are Us” is down four spots to No. 8 after debuting last week at No. 4, while “Just Push Play” (Columbia), the latest from veteran rock act Aerosmith, slips four spots to No. 9 this week.

Rounding out this week’s Top 10 is the debut album from R&B singer-guitarist India.Arie, whose “Acoustic Soul” (Motown) takes the No. 10 slot its first week out. The album’s first single, “Video,” is leaping up the singles charts, and has climbed a total of eight spots on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay charts in the past two weeks to rest at No. 17 on the latest edition.

Further down the chart, Buckcherry’s “Time Bomb” (DreamWorks) debuts at No. 64, Ben Harper’s “Live From Mars” (Virgin) debuts at No. 70 and Jesse Powell’s “JP” (MCA) debuts at No. 71.

Pearl Jam’s latest offering of “official” bootleg CDs--which brings the total of separate concert albums that the group has released since last September to 72--also makes a mark on the chart this week, with the collection’s only 3-CD set landing at No. 98. The box set captures the band’s final 2000 U.S. tour date in its hometown of Seattle on Nov. 6. The group’s Oct. 22 Las Vegas show also makes it into the Top 200, chiming in at No. 152.
