Pantera forges Extreme Steel tour

Pantera , whose current U.S. tour is winding down, has made plans to headline its own traveling heavy-metal festival this summer. Dubbed the Extreme Steel Tour, the quintuple bill will also feature Slayer , Static-X , Morbid Angel and Skrape.

The arena outing is set to get underway in June, and dates have been set throughout the U.S. and Canada. Ticket on-sale dates have not been announced.

“Air-conditioned comfort at a high-decibel level will be the theme of [the] ‘Extreme Steel [Tour],’” said Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul in a group press release. “Being Texas boys, we know how brutal the outdoors can be once June rolls around.”

Pantera has been on a headlining tour of the U.S. since February, with Morbid Angel in the opening slot. The current leg of the tour is scheduled to wrap up on Monday night (4/2) in Florida. A month-long break is then planned before the band tours Australia and New Zealand in May. Single stops in Alaska and Korea are also set for May.

Slayer’s most recent album is 1998’s “Diabolus in Musica” (Columbia). The band reportedly is at work on a new disc.

Static-X’s second album, “The Machine,” will hit stores in May, according to the group’s official website.

Skrape is set to wrap up an opening stint for Disturbed on Monday night (4/2) in Montreal. A subsequent headlining club tour is set for April.

Of the five bands slated for the Extreme Steel Tour, three---Pantera, Slayer and Static-X--are Ozzfest alumni. This year’s annual Ozzfest outing--an outdoor festival featuring two stages and a lengthy roster of acts--gets underway in late May. With the exception of a close call in Dallas that will find both Extreme Steel and Ozzfest passing through town within a 9-day period, the tours’ respective stops in the same markets or in closely situated markets take place several weeks apart.
