Styx, Bad Company, Billy Squier to hit amphitheaters

Styx , Bad Company and Billy Squier will team this summer for a two-month, 40-city tour of the amphitheater circuit. Members of Styx and Bad Company announced their plans at a Wednesday (2/28) press conference at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland.

The tour will open at the Blossom Music Center near Cleveland on May 10, and a portion of the ticket sales from each show will benefit the Rock Hall. Joe Stark, a 19-year-old blues singer-guitarist, will also be on the tour's bill.

Before the outing gets underway, Styx and Bad Company will warm up with a May 7 acoustic show at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. The show will be open to the public and free with paid admission to the Rock Hall.

Styx’s lineup for the jaunt will include guitarist-vocalist Tommy Shaw, guitarist-vocalist James "JY" Young, bassist-vocalist Glen Burtnik (who joined the band in 1990 when he briefly replaced Shaw), Lawrence Gowan on keyboards-vocals, and drummer Todd Sucherman. Original bassist Chuck Panozzo will make special appearances on select dates during the tour.

Missing from the band will be Styx co-founder Dennis DeYoung, who sued his former bandmates last year for allegedly misusing the group's name and making band decisions without him.

Last spring, a co-headlining tour featuring Styx and REO Speedwagon--two bands that reached their sales peaks in the late '70s and early '80s--attracted an average of close to 9,000 fans per city when it toured the amphitheater circuit, according to Amusement Business. The tour spawned a live album titled “Arch Allies” (CMC International).

Classic rockers Bad Company will feature vocalist Paul Rodgers and drummer Simon Kirke, both from the band’s original lineup. The touring band will also include longtime Bad Company guitarist David "Bucket" Colwell, and bassist Rick Wills, who has also performed with Foreigner and David Gilmour.

Squier’s return to the stage comes after a 10-year absence from the touring circuit, according to tour publicists.
