Brian Setzer lines up busy year of touring, recording

The new Brian Setzer -fronted trio 68 Comeback Special will begin recording its first album later this month, and plans to open a summer tour on June 15. In the midst of the tour, Brian Setzer Orchestra--a 17-piece outfit that also features Setzer on guitar and vocals--is set to play shows in Atlantic City and Los Angeles.

68 Comeback Special includes drummer Bernie Dresel and bassist Mark Winchester, both members of the Brian Setzer Orchestra. The trio, which has performed live on only three occasions, plays “a cross-section of American music including (but certainly not limited to) their own brand of high-octane Rockabilly,” according to Setzer’s official website. The group takes its name from an Elvis Presley television special, broadcast in 1968, that eventually came to be known as Presley's "'68 Comeback Special."

Of the four albums that it has released, the Brian Setzer Orchestra’s most commercially successful disc to date is 1998’s “The Dirty Boogie,” which has been certified double-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The album features the hit “Jump, Jive an’ Wail,” which peaked at No. 14 on Billboard’s Top 40 Adult singles chart in October of 1998.

Last month, the group picked up a Grammy Award in the Best Pop Instrumental Performance category for its song "Caravan," which is featured on the group’s August 2000 album “Vavoom!” (Interscope). A holiday album from the group is planned for later this year.

Setzer rose to fame in the ‘80s fronting the rockabilly trio the Stray Cats, a group that scored with the Top 10 hits “Rock This Town” and “Stray Cat Strut.” He formed the Brian Setzer Orchestra in the mid-‘90s.
