Indigo Girls' Amy Ray plots spring solo outing
Amy Ray, one half of the popular folk duo Indigo Girls , will set out on a month-long tour in support of her forthcoming release “Stag” on March 29. The album is set to hit stores on March 6.
Prior to the March 29 Atlanta kick off of her tour proper, Ray--with support from the Butchies--is scheduled to perform in Austin, Texas, at the annual South by Southwest (SXSW) music conference.
Marking Ray’s solo debut, “Stag” will be released on the singer’s own Daemon Records. The label is a not-for-profit organization that Ray founded in 1990.
“The genesis of Daemon Records arose from my own frustrations with the music industry,” Ray says in a statement posted on Daemon’s official website. “While reaping the benefits of a major label deal, I realized that all around me ‘music’ was getting lost among the checkbooks, executives, and mountains of paperwork that are all such a primary part of any major label.”
To mark the release of “Stag,” Ray has planned a special promotion through which a number of retailers will offer a limited-edition 7” vinyl record to those who purchase “Stag.” The 7” features one live track and one track recorded during the “Stag” sessions that wasn’t used on the album. A list of cities and retailers that are participating in the promotion is available on Daemon’s website.
Ray and fellow Indigo Girl Emily Saliers toured the U.S. last fall as the headlining act on the Honor the Earth 2000 tour. The duo released "Retrospective" last October, a compilation featuring 14 previously released tracks and two new songs.
