Robbie Williams takes home three Brit Awards
LONDON--Robbie Williams was the top winner at this year’s Brit Awards, which were held in London on Monday (2/26). Williams took gongs for Best British Video and Best British Single for "Rock DJ," as well as for Best British Male.
Williams has received 12 Brit Awards--the U.K.'s equivalent to a Grammy--in his musical career to date, including four during his time with pop group Take That. Of the three awards he won on Monday, two--Best British Video and Best British Single--were decided by a public vote.
He said, "This is my fourth year of coming back and getting awards and I am going to say nothing except thank you very much," as he accepted his Best British Male Award from Geri Halliwell, according to BBC News.
U2 and Coldplay picked up two gongs each. The famous Irish rock band was named Best International Group, and also was commended for their Outstanding Contribution to the British Music Industry.
Rising indie guitar outfit Coldplay was named Best British Group, and also picked up Best British Album for "Parachutes." The band's debut LP was also nominated for last year’s Mercury Music Prize, but it lost to Badly Drawn Boy.
Though he was nominated in six categories, soul singer Craig David did not win any awards. The news of David’s lack of wins was leaked to the press before the Brits ceremony took place. David told British tabloid the Sun on Monday, "The Brit Awards need to look at the voting system. I think I’ve been a victim of my own success. Because I was nominated in six categories my voting has been spread. But I’m going to be around a long time."
Brits organizers reportedly offered to make up an award for him for Best Selling Debut Album, but David turned it down. He told the Sun, "I wasn’t prepared to be palmed off with a made-up award. I’m flattered they felt I deserved it but I wanted to win one of the ones I’ve been nominated for."
Americans honored with Brit awards included Madonna , Eminem and Kelis. Though Madonna did not appear at the ceremony, her husband, Guy Ritchie, accepted her award for Best International Female for her via a video link as she dusted a picture of Queen Elizabeth behind him.
Eminem collected the award for Best International Male from Elton John and rapper Kelis was named Best International Newcomer.
