Robyn Hitchcock, Soft Boys map first U.S. tour
In celebration of the March 13 reissue of their 1980 album "Underwater Moonlight," the Soft Boys--featuring frontman Robyn Hitchcock --are reuniting for their first U.S. tour.
The 15-show jaunt kicks off on March 17 in Austin, Texas, as part of the music industry's South by Southwest music conference, and wraps up on April 9 at Los Angeles' Knitting Factory. The outing marks the first time in 20 years that the group's original lineup--Hitchcock, guitarist Kimberley Rew, bassist Matthew Seligman and drummer Morris Windsor--has gigged together.
Rykodisc reissued the entire Soft Boys catalogue, including "Underwater Moonlight," in 1992. Those CDs, however, are now out of print. When Matador Records sends the remastered "Underwater Moonlight" to stores, it will be the only Soft Boys record currently available, according to the band's publicist.
The new version of "Underwater Moonlight" will include eight bonus tracks found on the Ryko reissue, as well as the 1983 single "He's a Reptile." There is also a bonus CD that contains rehearsal tracks from 1979-80.
The Soft Boys formed in 1976, and broke up in 1981. Hitchcock then went solo, releasing a handful of records on A&M and Warner Bros., including his last album, 1999's "Jewels for Sophia." Rew went on to form Katrina and the Waves and penned the Bangles' hit "Going Down to Liverpool."
Hitchcock recently completed a tour with Grant-Lee Phillips.
John Wesley Harding and the Radical Gentlemen are taking a detour from their headlining tour to open for the Soft Boys on select dates.
