The Rosenbergs embrace file-sharing on debut album

The first 10,000 copies of the debut release from New York rock quartet the Rosenbergs will feature a bonus copy of the disc--dubbed a "Napster copy"--that those who purchase the CD are urged to share with a friend. Napster, the embattled file-sharing network, is also sponsoring the band's upcoming tour.

The Rosenbergs' "Mission: You" (Discipline Global Mobile) is scheduled to be released on Feb. 20. Both discs will be individually wrapped, and the Napster copy will bear the Napster logo.

"We love the idea of more people listening to and wanting to share our music," David Fagin, the band's lead singer and guitarist, said in a statement. "Napster made that easier online. With their help, we're making it easier off-line as well. How many times have you popped in a CD and thought about a specific person you knew who would love the thing? Now you can hand them one right away."

Rosenbergs manager Adrian Molloy agreed. "We're eager to exploit the full potential of the Internet, and view Napster as a key component to any successful digital marketing campaign," he said. "With the Napster copy, we are trying to show that getting the music out there will ultimately grow the Rosenbergs' audience and increase the band's revenue stream. We're investing in potential fans in the hope that they invest in us."

Besides the alliance with Napster, the Rosenbergs have an interesting record deal as well--with Discipline Global Mobile, co-owned by King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp and David Singleton.

As part of that deal, DGM will finance, distribute and promote the band, and share in all band-related revenues, including revenues from concert tickets, merchandise and the digital distribution. In exchange, the Rosenbergs retain full ownership of their master recordings--an extremely rare practice in the music industry.

Last year, DGM became one of the first music companies to actively embrace Napster's file-sharing service as a marketing tool by agreeing to have the Rosenbergs promoted via Napster's Featured Music Program. In addition to the 10,000 Napster copies of "Mission: You," DGM will make several tracks from the album available to the Napster file-sharing community via a search link in its Featured Music section.

Guitarist-vocalist Fagin founded the Rosenbergs in 1995. Rounded out by bassist Evan Silverman, drummer Joe Darone, and guitarist Joe Mahoney, the group released its independent label debut, "Ameripop," on Pomonasounds.
