Woman in critical condition, others hurt after Limp Bizkit crowd crush
An 18-year-old woman reportedly was in critical condition after suffering a heart attack, and at least six other fans suffered injuries in a crowd crush that occurred during Limp Bizkit ’s performance at Friday night’s (1/26) Big Day Out festival date in Australia.
According to Australian press reports, the crowd at the Showgrounds in Sydney surged forward as Limp Bizkit, the day’s final act, performed after nightfall. Attendance at the show was estimated to be between 45,000 and 55,000.
The young woman who suffered the heart attack--whose identity was unknown at press time--was reportedly passed over the top of the crowd to the side of the stage unconscious. After the crush, firefighters cooled the crowd with fire hoses.
Six other people were reportedly treated for heat exhaustion and possible back injuries following the incident.
Organizers issued a press release that blamed the incident on the excessive heat and on an unusually volatile crowd.
“The performance was stopped several times in an effort to evaluate the health and safety of our audience,” the statement said. "Several times during their performance, Limp Bizkit urged the audience to step back and assist fellow concert goers in need of assistance, and promoters compliment the band's diligence in this. The organizers of the event would like to acknowledge the full co-operation of Limp Bizkit through this difficult situation and their commitment to the safety of their audience."
Additional barriers and security staff will be added for the three remaining shows on the Big Day Out itinerary, which is scheduled to continue on Sunday (1/28) in Melbourne, the statement said.
Other bands on this year's Big Day Out bill include Coldplay , Rammstein, P.J. Harvey and You am I.
