Charts: Beatles hold steady, 'Save the Last Dance' jumps to No. 3
Amassing 27 No. 1 hits released 30 to 40 years ago and placing them on one album has proven fruitful for the Beatles, whose “1” (Capitol) compilation holds on to the album chart’s top spot for the seventh week in a row, according to industry sources. The rest of the Top 10 sees relatively little movement as well, with the exception of the “Save the Last Dance” (Hollywood) soundtrack, which makes its inaugural appearance near the top of the chart.
Released in November, “1” has spent a total of eight weeks as the leader in U.S. album sales. The album has enjoyed similar success in the Liverpool quartet’s homeland, but was toppled from the No. 1 position on the U.K. chart this week.
Shaggy ’s “Hotshot” (MCA) hangs on to the No. 2 spot for the third week straight. The album is being buoyed by the reggae-R&B singer’s current hit, “It Wasn’t Me,” which is No. 2 on Radio & Records’ national airplay pop chart.
The most impressive move in this week’s Top 10 comes courtesy of the “Save the Last Dance” soundtrack, which leaps into the No. 3 spot, up from No. 11 last week and No. 41 two weeks back. The album--which features artists such as Snoop Dogg, Q-Tip, K-Ci & Jo-Jo and the late Notorious B.I.G.--was released on Dec. 19, but the motion picture didn’t hit theaters until Jan. 12. The film has been No. 1 at the box office for the past two weeks.
The new addition to the Top 10 pushes both the “Now That’s What I Call Music Vol. 5” (Columbia) compilation and Creed ’s “Human Clay” (Wind Up) down a notch to Nos. 4 and 5 respectively.
Sade ’s “Lovers Rock” (Epic) remains unmoved at No. 6 for the second week in a row, while Limp Bizkit’s “Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavored Water” (Flip/Interscope) drops two places to No. 7.
Dido’s “No Angel” (Arista), which first broke into the Top 10 at No. 9 two weeks back, advances to No. 8 this week after spending last week at No. 10. Outkast’s “Stankonia” (La Face/Arista), meanwhile, dips from No. 7 to No. 9.
Rounding out this week’s Top 10 is Lenny Kravtiz’s “Greatest Hits” (Virgin), which is down a notch from last week.
This week’s highest-charting debut is Alabama’s latest, “When It All Goes South” (RCA), which enters the chart at No. 37. The veteran country act recently announced a series of tour dates in support of the album.
