U.K. Charts: The Beatles' '1' holds on to No. 1
LONDON--The Beatles had the No. 1 album for Christmas 2000 as "1" took the top spot on the Official U.K. Album Chart on Sunday (12/24). The hits collection has been at No. 1 for five weeks, and was the best-selling album of the year in Britain.
Rounding out the Top 5 albums were Westlife 's "Coast to Coast" at No. 2, Robbie Williams ' "Sing When You're Winning" at No. 3, Madonna 's "Music" at No. 4, and Texas' "The Greatest Hits" at No. 5.
There were no new entries on the album chart this week, however Dr. Dre's "2001" LP re-entered the chart at No. 68.
Children's television character Bob the Builder was No. 1 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart, beating out boy band Westlife. Bob's single "Can We Fix It" was released three weeks ago, and entered the chart at No. 2, behind Eminem's "Stan." Last week, "Can We Fix It" jumped into the No. 1 slot, and it has held on for a second week. "What Makes A Man," Westlife's eighth single, debuted at No. 2. Each of the group's previous singles had entered the chart at No. 1.
Other new releases on the Christmas singles chart included Oxide & Neutrino at No. 6, Sugarbabes at No. 12 and more children's TV characters, The Wombles and Roy Wood, at No. 22.
