Briefly: ODB, MP3, Napster, Sting & Styx
Roebuck "Pops" Staples, leader of the gospel/soul group the Staple Singers, died at age 85 following a concussion, the Associated Press reported. The Staple Singers are perhaps best known for the song "I'll Take You There."
During Ol' Dirty Bastard 's days as a fugitive--click here to read about that--the rapper recorded some music with RZA. Both are members of Wu-Tang Clan. (Or, more accurately, we assume ODB still is.)
The New York Times reported that "Emusic.com and six of its independent partner labels" have filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against MP3.com. This year, MP3.com settled five similar lawsuits filed by major record labels.
According to Reuters, "Germany's internal security agency called on media giant Bertelsmann Tuesday to help stop its online song swap partner Napster from being used to exchange music by extreme right-wing bands."
The Super Bowl's pre-game show will feature Sting and Styx . CBS will televise part of the show. The show's title: "Life's Super in Central Florida."
"Because it's so wretchedly humid in Central Florida, most of us would like to ... 'Sail Away'! And here to sing about just that--the band with too much time on its hands, who taught a generation of Americans how to say 'Thank you' in Japanese, who were featured in one of the more disturbing 'Behind the Music's---they're our lady ... STYX!!!"
