Styx and REO Speedwagon to regroup in 2001
Styx and REO Speedwagon postponed the final five dates of a November-December tour after REO Speedwagon frontman Kevin Cronin came down with a case of laryngitis. Three of the five co-headlining shows have been rescheduled, and are now set to take place during a newly announced, month-long stint of dates that will get underway in mid-January.
The canceled shows were to have taken place in Asheville, N.C., Greensboro, N.C., Chattanooga, Tenn., Jacksonville, Fla., and Orlando, Fla. The Asheville show was rescheduled for Jan. 29, the Jacksonville show was moved to Feb. 7 and the Orlando show is now set for Feb. 6, according to REO Speedwagon’s official website. The Greensboro and Chattanooga shows had not been rescheduled at press time.
The November-December tour of Styx and REO Speedwagon was scheduled after a previous pairing of the bands exceeded box office expectations. According to Amusement Business, the Styx-REO package--which featured two bands that reached their sales peaks in the late '70s and early '80s--attracted an average of close to 9,000 fans per city when it toured the amphitheater circuit this spring, grossing more than $4.6 million in ticket sales over 21 dates.
The spring tour resulted in a live album by Styx and REO Speedwagon called "Arch Allies: Live at Riverport." The CD features live sets from each band, as well as two jams featuring both acts.
Survivor , best known for contributing "Eye of the Tiger" to the "Rocky III" movie soundtrack, will be on the bill for many of the tour’s January stops.
