Lenny Kravitz detained in search for Miami bank robber

Lenny Kravitz , who is currently in Florida working on his next album, was detained and questioned on Friday (11/24) by Miami police who believed that he matched the description of a bank-robbery suspect, according to a Miami police spokesperson. He was subsequently released after police determined that he was not the robber.

Kravitz was walking to a Miami gym with his trainer shortly after the robbery occurred when he was stopped by officers searching for the robbery suspect, the police spokesperson said. The musician was detained until an eyewitness to the robbery was brought to the scene and indicated that Kravitz was not the robber.

In an interview with MTV on Tuesday, Kravitz questioned why the officers had handcuffed him during the incident.

“The whole thing I need to find out first is why I was cuffed first,” Kravitz said in an audio excerpt of the interview. “Granted, I was told that I was not under arrest after I was cuffed, but can you just cuff someone like that?”

Miami police spokesperson Bobby Hernandez indicated that the department's standard procedure in such incidents does not involve handcuffing the suspect. He could not confirm Kravitz’ account of the incident.

“I’m not aware that he was handcuffed, but I know that he was detained,” Hernandez said. “And, from speaking to the officers on the scene, I was told that he was very cooperative. In fact, he shook everybody’s hand at the end. He was very helpful, actually. He understood why he had been stopped there.”

The MTV report indicated that Kravitz is consulting an attorney about possible legal action. A spokesperson for Kravitz could not be reached by press time.
