Green Day to play free benefit concert

Green Day will take the stage for a free concert in San Francisco on Sunday (11/05) during an event to support Bay Area musicians. Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett is among the other Bay Area musicians scheduled to appear, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The event is scheduled to take place at San Francisco’s Civic Center Plaza beginning at 1 p.m. Green Day is slated to perform at 4:30 p.m., and will be preceded by a number of local musicians including Victoria Williams, Creeper Lagoon, Zen Guerilla and the Blind Boys of Alabama.

Hammett is not scheduled to perform, but is expected to speak at the event.

Dubbed the Take Back San Francisco Concert, Sunday’s event is being conducted to show support for musicians in San Francisco, who, as of late, have found it increasingly difficult to afford practice and living space in a real estate market where prices are rising. Once-affordable rehearsal locations and apartments are reportedly being snatched up by comparatively wealthy dot-com companies and their employees.

Last month, more than 500 Bay Area bands were evicted from their practice space at a location called Downtown Rehearsal, and Club Cocodrie, a staple on the local music scene, closed its doors for good, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Green Day’s latest album, “Warning” (Warner Bros.), was released on Oct. 3. The group recently completed a string of concerts in Australia, and is scheduled to head to Europe for more dates next month. A US tour is expected next year.

The band is scheduled to appear on "The Tonight Show” on Friday, Nov. 10, according to the group’s official website.
