'Thriller' reclaims a piece of album sales crown
Michael Jackson’s 1982 album "Thriller" has been certified for sales of more than 26 million copies by the Recording Industry Association of America, lifting it into a tie with the Eagles’ "Their Greatest Hits 1971-1974" as the best-selling album of all time.
"Thriller" held the record as the United States’ top-selling album in history from 1984 until 1999, when the Eagles tied, then eclipsed his sales mark.
Third on the RIAA’s list of top-selling albums is Pink Floyd’s "The Wall" (23 million). It is followed by Led Zeppelin "IV" (22 million), Billy Joel’s "Greatest Hits Volume I & Volume II" (21 million), and Fleetwood Mac’s "Rumors" (18 million).
The 1997 Jackson album, "Blood on the Dance Floor: History in the Mix," was also certified platinum in October, bringing his cumulative U.S. album sales to 56 million.
Madonna’s latest album, "Music," was certified at the 2-million mark during October. It is her 12th album to reach multi-platinum status. Also in October, Madonna’s debut album topped the 5-million mark and her 1995 album "Something to Remember" surpassed 3 million.
In other diva news, Barbra Streisand’s "Timeless: Live in Concert" was certified in October for sales of more than one million copies. Streisand has sold more albums than any other solo female artist in history.
Meanwhile, Tom Petty received October certifications for 1991’s "Into the Great Wide Open" (2 million), 1993’s "Greatest Hits" (9 million), and 1989’s "Full Moon Fever" (5 million), bring his total sales to 26 million.

Albums hitting the 3-million sales mark in October were 3 Doors Down’s "The Better Life" and Fleetwood Mac’s "Tango in the Night."
Other albums reaching double-platinum (2 million) status were "Gentlemen, the Best of George Michael," Mary J. Blige’s "Mary," Charlotte Church’s "Voice of an Angel," and DC Talk’s "Jesus Freak."
