New Releases, Oct. 24: Christina, Hootie, Kravitz, more
Christina Aguilera , whose “Mi Riflejo” Spanish-language CD just hit shelves last month, returns to stores this week with “My Kind of Christmas” (RCA), a collection of 11 holiday tunes sung by the teen pop sensation.
Included among the album’s 11 tracks are two versions of “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting … ),” according to Aguilera’s official website. The first version is taken from Aguilera’s performance for President Bill Clinton at the 1999 "Christmas in Washington" television special, and the second is a previously unreleased version of the song remixed by renowned DJs Barry Harris and Chris Cox, who are collectively known as Thunderpuss 2000.
The new disc also includes guest appearances by Dr. John on the track “Merry Christmas Baby” and Billy Preston on “Oh Holy Night.”
Aguilera’s self-titled, debut album was released last year, and has since been certified multi-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for shipping over 7 million copies. “Mi Riflejo,” meanwhile, was released on Sept. 12, and includes new versions of some tracks featured on the singer’s debut disc, including “Genio Atrapado,” the Spanish-language version of her breakthrough single “Genie in a Bottle.”
In keeping with the theme of “Mi Riflejo,” “My Kind of Christmas” finds Aguilera slipping into Spanish on the track “Silent Night / Noche de Pas.”
Sammy Hagar is back this week with his third post-Van Halen release, “Ten 13” (Beyond / Cabo Wabo). The album features the single “Serious JUJU,” currently at No. 6 on Radio & Records’ rock chart, which measures national radio airplay.
The title of Hagar’s new album is a nod to his Oct. 13 birthday, which he celebrates each year by performing with his band, the Waboritas, at his Baja, Mexico, nightclub, the Cabo Wabo Cantina. Hundreds of Hagar’s fans make the pilgrimage to the club--which he originally opened with Van Halen in 1990--for the annual Birthday Bash. For those who can’t make it south of the border, Hagar is taking a replica of the nightclub with him on his upcoming tour.
The Cabo Wabo Birthday Bash tour kicks off in Phoenix on Nov. 11. The jaunt was originally scheduled to begin in Connecticut on Halloween, but the first six dates had to be postponed when it was discovered that the clubs booked for the initial dates were not big enough to accommodate the Cabo Wabo stage-set.
To help launch the new disc, Hagar has a number of television and radio appearances scheduled, according to his official website, including an online chat on Yahoo! on Tuesday (10/24) and an appearance on the syndicated radio program “Rockline” on Wednesday (10/25).
Roni Size and Reprazent are back this week with “In the Mode” (Island/Def Jam). The British-based, jungle-electronica group’s sophomore disc features guest vocals from rappers Method Man, the Roots’ Rahzel, and former Rage Against the Machine frontman Zach de la Rocha, who last week announced that he had left the outspoken rap-rock act.
“In the Mode” is the follow-up to the band’s 2-disc major label debut, 1997’s “New Forms.”
Last summer’s metal-meets-ink festival, dubbed the Tattoo the Earth tour, has resulted in “Tattoo the Earth: The First Crusade” (1500 Records). The disc includes performances from Slipknot, Sevendust, Slayer, Sepultura, (hed)pe and Mudvayne. Members of several of the bands featured on the disc are scheduled to make a special appearance on "Rockline" on Nov. 6, according to 1500 Records’ official website.
Lenny Kravitz ’ “Greatest Hits” hits stores this week, featuring tracks from the funk-rock musician’s first five albums, including his first hit, “Let Love Rule,” and his first rock crossover, “Always on the Run,” featuring the then-Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash. The disc also contains Kravitz’ cover of the Guess Who’s “American Woman,” originally found on the “Austin Powers 2” soundtrack. Fans who already have the aforementioned tunes will still need to pick the new compilation up in order to obtain the 15-track album’s one new number, “Again.”
Following in the footsteps of many previous rap-rock collaborations, “Take a Bite Outta Rhyme: A Rock Tribute to Rap” (Universal) debuts this week. The 14-track disc finds acts such as Insane Clown Posse, Kottonmouth Kings, Staind, Everlast and Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst retooling old-school rap classics such as Grandmaster Flash’s “White Lines (Don’t Do It)” and Run D.M.C.’s “It’s Tricky.” The album also features Sevendust’s raucous interpretation of LL Cool J’s “Goin’ Back to Cali” which has been spinning on rock radio for the past few weeks.
Daytime television spills into the world of music this week with the release of not one, but two albums from daytime talk-show hostesses. First up is Kathie Lee--in the wake of her recent departure from “Live with Regis & Kathie Lee”--with “Heart of a Woman” (Universal). “Tracks such as ‘Always Been You,’ ‘In This Life’ and ‘Make My Day’ showcase her versatility as a vocalist,” according to a press release from her record label.
Joining Kathie Lee on the shelves this week is Rosie O’Donnell's “Another Rosie Christmas” (Columbia), the follow-up to last year’s “A Rosie Christmas.” Guests on the new album include Jessica Simpson, Smash Mouth, Macy Gray, Dixie Chicks, Jewel, Ricky Martin, Destiny's Child, Sugar Ray, Billy Gilman, Marc Anthony, Donna Summer and Barry Manilow. Proceeds from the album will go to O’Donnell’s non-profit For All Kids Foundation, according to the album’s official website.
Last year's album, "A Rosie Christmas,” shipped over one million copies, according to the Recording Industry Association of America.
