Madonna [ tickets ] has won the rights to the domain name Madonna.com, according to a World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) document outlining the decision. The domain name was originally registered by a New York man who housed a sexually explicit website at the address.

In a written decision dated Oct. 12, a three-person WIPO Arbitration and Mediation panel determined that Dan Parisi had to surrender possession of Madonna.com to the famous pop-music icon. Madonna--whose birth name is Madonna Ciccone, and who has trademarked her first name--filed her complaint with the WIPO in July, according to the decision.

“ [Parisi] lacks rights or legitimate interests in the domain name,” wrote the WIPO panel in its decision, “and the domain name has been registered and used in bad faith. Therefore, we decide that the disputed domain name should be transferred to [Madonna].”

The WIPO is a specialized agency of the United Nations that rules on intellectual property matters recognized by the member States of the U.N. The WIPO's Internet domain-name mediation program was introduced last year in an effort to end "cybersquatting" by individuals who register high-profile domain names in hopes of profiting from them.

In August, the WIPO, during a similar arbitration, awarded JimiHendrix.com to the legendary guitarist’s family, who had filed a complaint seeking to recover the name from a cybersquatter. Actress Julia Roberts also successfully recovered the domain name JuliaRoberts.com through the WIPO’s arbitration process this year.

Former Police frontman Sting, however, struck out during his arbitration process when a WIPO panel ruled that he was not entitled to the domain name Sting.com.
