Grand Ole Opry’s 75th anniversary celebration set for this weekend
The Grand Ole Opry, which bills itself as the world’s longest-running live radio show, will celebrate its 75th anniversary on Friday and Saturday (10/13-14) with appearances by a slew of core country artists, including Garth Brooks , Vince Gill , Loretta Lynn , Diamond Rio and Dolly Parton .
Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry House will host five separate shows on Friday and Saturday. Although the first show will begin at 6:30 p.m. Central Time on Friday, one of the main events will be a red carpet arrival ceremony that will precede Saturday’s 6:30 p.m. show.
Some of the festivities will be broadcast over the Internet, according to Opry publicists. Beginning at 6 p.m. Central Time on Friday night, the opry.com website will host live half-hour Internet chats with Diamond Rio and Bill Anderson from backstage at the venue. At 5:15 p.m., on Saturday, opry.com will begin streaming live video from the red carpet arrival. A press conference featuring several Opry stars will follow at 7:15 p.m.
A one-hour live broadcast from the event is scheduled to air from 7 to 8 p.m. Central Time on the TNN cable network.
The Grand Ole Opry radio show began as the WSM Barn Dance on Nov. 28, 1925. Two years later, its name was changed to the Grand Ole Opry. The program has had eight homes over the course of its history, including Nashville’s WSM radio studios and Ryman Auditorium. The show has emanated from its current home on the grounds of Nashville’s Opryland Hotel since 1974.
