Michael Jackson's final concert to hit theaters
Michael Jackson will grace the big screen posthumously when Sony Pictures releases a combination of rehearsal and behind-the-scenes footage entitled "This Is It" later this year.
The high-definition production, due in theaters Oct. 30, mostly will feature footage from Jackson's June rehearsals at Los Angeles' Staples Center in preparation for a sold-out series of 50 London concerts that was due to begin last month. A career retrospective and interviews with close friends and collaborators will also be part of the show, as well as a selection of 3-D sequences.
"This historic recording of the last time he sang and danced on stage shows the legendary artist in an incredibly powerful way, with crystal clear images and sound," Sony Pictures CEO Michael Lynton said in a press release. "We understand the importance of producing a film that pays tribute to Michael as an artist, and are honored to work with The Estate of Michael Jackson to give audiences the gift of his final performances."
More information about the production will be available in the coming weeks at Jackson's website.
Since his June 25 death, Jackson's discography has returned to the top of the Billboard charts, moving 800,000 copies alone in the week following his passing. During his career, the King of Pop has sold more than 750 million records worldwide, released 13 No. 1 singles and won 13 Grammy Awards.
Jackson, who received the American Music Awards' Artist of the Century Award, is one of a handful to be twice inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: once in 1997 as a member of The Jackson 5, and again in 2001 as a solo artist.
