Beyonce, Lady Gaga tie with nine MTV VMA nominations

With nine nominations each, Beyonce and Lady Gaga lead the pack of nominees for this year's MTV Video Music Awards, which will be distributed Sept. 13 in New York City.

Beyonce earned the nine nominations for one song, "Single Ladies (Put A Ring on It)," while Lady Gaga's nine nominations are divided among two singles: "Poker Face" and Paparazzi," both from her October release, "The Fame." Britney Spears returns to the VMA spotlight with seven combined nods for "Womanizer" and "Circus."

Coldplay and Kanye West received four nominations each, Green Day earned three and Jay-Z snagged two.

A handful of first-time nominees made the list as well, including new rapper Asher Roth , who is vying for "Best Hip-Hop Video" opposite Eminem . Eminem, who recently returned to the limelight following a four-year hiatus, has received four nominations for his single "We Made You." Latin Grammy Award winner Wisin Y Yandel, rock outfit Kings of Leon and rapper Drake also received first-time nods for recent videos.

The 26th annual award show, hosted by comedian/actor Russell Brand, will air live from New York City on Sept. 13 at 9 p.m. ET. Confirmed performers include Green Day, Pink, Taylor Swift and Muse, while Katy Perry, Ne-Yo and "Gossip Girl" star Chace Crawford are scheduled to present.
