Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, more will contribute to 'Mandela Day' concert
Stevie Wonder , Alicia Keys , France's First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and many more will come together July 18 in New York to honor former South African President Nelson Mandela's 91st birthday.
The Mandela Day concert celebration will take place at New York's Madison Square Garden and include more than two-dozen musicians who find the humanitarian and Nobel Peace Prize winner an inspiration.
The confirmed artists include Dave Stewart, Aretha Franklin, Wyclef Jean, Queen Latifah, Cyndi Lauper, Angelique Kidjo, Baaba Maal, Jesse McCartney, TLC and The Soweto Gospel Choir, as well as several African musicians such as Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Chris Chameleon, Freshlyground, Emmanuel Jal, Loyiso, Sipho Mabuse, Vusi Mahlasela, Thandiswa Mazwai and Suzanna Owiyo. More performers will be announced in the coming weeks.
Tickets are available now via Ticketmaster. (Ticketmaster is LiveDaily's parent company.)
Before becoming the first democratically elected President of South Africa in 1994, Mandela spent 27 years in prison on charges of sabotage and other crimes he allegedly committed while leading the movement against apartheid. He was released in 1990 and, following his five-year reign as President, has continued advocating for various social and human-rights organizations, including his own Nelson Mandela Foundation.
Proceeds from the ticket sales will benefit 46664, a non-profit offshoot of his foundation--named after his prison number of 27 years--that uses entertainment-related events to promote community-outreach campaigns that encourage people to participate in discussions, activities, and volunteer work, as well as HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment support.
