Former Billy Joel drummer sues for royalties

Liberty DeVitto , longtime drummer for Billy Joel , is suing the performer and Sony Music for what could be hundreds of thousands of dollars in overdue royalties, according to the New York Post.

DeVitto, who was Joel's drummer from 1975 to 2005, claims he was abruptly fired from the band without severance, insurance or the courtesy of a phone call.

The suit, filed last week in Manhattan Supreme Court, does not specify monetary damages. Attorneys for the drummer are seeking an audit, claiming DeVitto doesn't know what he is owed because he hasn't received an accounting of Joel's sales in about 10 years.
