Madonna gets second chance at adoption
Madonna has secured a court date in her quest to adopt a second Malawian child. Her appeal to overturn a judge's decision in order to adopt 3-year-old Chifundo "Mercy" James will come before three Supreme Court of Appeal judges May 4, according to BBC News.
Madonna's original application to adopt the child--who has been living in the same orphanage from which Madonna adopted her son David Banda in 2006--reportedly was rejected because of a residency rule requiring prospective parents to reside in the southern African state for 18 to 24 months prior to any adoption.
Her Malawian lawyer said he was hopeful of a successful appeal as the initial rejection was based "on an archaic law of over 50 years ago," according to the BBC.
