Green Day returns to tour trail behind 'Breakdown'
Green Day has announced a return to the road this summer after a three-year hiatus, supporting the May 15 drop of the long-awaited "21st Century Breakdown."
The Grammy-winning rock band will get things started July 3 in Seattle, hitting 38 cities across North America through late August. Venues have yet to be announced. The outing will also swing through a number of Canadian cities before the Aug. 25 finale in Los Angeles. The full schedule is below, though venues have not yet been confirmed.
The punk rockers--singer/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tre Cool--have spent three years working on their eighth studio album, "21st Century Breakdown," alongside producer Butch Vig (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins). The effort's first single, "Know Your Enemy," hit radio airwaves last week.
The band's forthcoming release is its first studio album since 2004's two-time Grammy Award-winning "American Idiot," which spawned five hit singles, sold more than 12 million copies and will become a rock musical set to take the stage this fall at Berkeley's Roda Theatre. The performance will run Sept. 4 through Oct. 11, with tickets available now at the venue's website.
In support of the new record and their impending summer trek, the punk rockers will perform for five consecutive nights on NBC's "Last Call with Carson Daly" in June. The late-night residency has become a recent trend for big bands with new releases. U2 backed their latest, "No Line on the Horizon," with a weeklong residency on "The Late Show with David Letterman" in March and Prince did the same, performing three nights on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" behind "LOtUSFLOW3R" and "MPLSoUND" later that month.
Green Day recently surprised California fans with a series of last-minute club shows in San Francisco and Oakland that gave the audience a taste of the upcoming album. A May 18 show at New York's Beacon Theatre is the next scheduled appearance for the group.
