Santana's "Supernatural" Continues Winning Streak At Latin Grammys
Carlos Santana and Luis Miguel were the big winners at Wednesday night’s (9/13) first annual Latin Grammys, each winning three categories at the event’s inaugural ceremony. Trophies were also given out to a number of other Latin artists, including Marc Anthony, Shakira and Latin Grammy co-host Gloria Estefan .
Santana’s “Corazon Espinado,” which he recorded with Mexican rock band Maná, scored wins for Record of the Year, Best Pop Instrumental Performance and Best Rock Performance By a Duo Or Group With Vocal. The song is featured on Santana’s hugely successful “Supernatural” album, which garnered the guitarist a record-tying total of eight wins at the 42nd annual Grammys earlier this year.
Miguel’s “Amarte es un Placer” scored both the Album of the Year and Best Pop Album awards, while his song “Tu Mirada” won for Best Male Pop Vocal. The singer was not on hand to accept his awards.
Latin siren Shakira pulled down the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance award for her song “Ojos Así,” and the Best Female Vocal Rock Performance for “Octavo Día.” Both songs are featured on the singer’s “MTV Unplugged” album.
Other standouts in the ceremony’s 40 categories were Juan Luis Guerra and Fito Páez, both of whom also snagged two awards apiece.
In addition to Estefan, the event was co-hosted by Latin actors Jimmy Smits and Andy Garcia. Jennifer Lopez , who was originally billed as a fourth co-host, only served as a presenter during the ceremony.
Lopez was also originally scheduled to perform “No Me Ames,” a duet featuring both she and Anthony that was nominated in two categories. The performance was scrapped after Anthony backed out of the ceremony last minute to attend to his wife, who reportedly was experiencing complications with her pregnancy. The absent Anthony’s “Dimelo” scored the Song of the Year award.
Scheduled performances that did take place as planned included ‘N Sync’s pairing with Puerto Rico’s Son by Four. The two groups performed a Spanish-language version of ‘N Sync’s “This I Promise You.”
Fellow pop sensation Christina Aguilera also performed, delivering the Spanish-language version of her hit “Genie in a Bottle.” The version--dubbed “Genio Atrapado”--is featured on Aguilera’s Spanish-language album, which was released on Tuesday (9/12).
Performances were also featured by Santana and Maná, Shakira, Ricky Martin , Celia Cruz and Estefan.
Estefan and her husband, Emilio Estefan, Jr., meanwhile, shared the award for Best Music Video for her song “No Me Dejes de Querer,” which her husband directed. Emelio also claimed the trophy for producer of the year for his work with a number of Latin recording artists.
