The Jacksons to receive BMI Icons honor

The Jacksons will be crowned this year's Broadcast Music Incorporated Icons at the 8th Annual Urban Music Awards.

The Icon designation is given to BMI songwriters and artists who have had "a unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers," according to a press release. The family act will be saluted with an all-star musical tribute during the ceremony, specific details for which have not yet been announced.

Scheduled to take place Sept. 4 at the Wilshire Theatre in Beverly Hills, CA, the event salutes "the world's premier R&B, rap and hip-hop songwriters, producers and publishers by touting the most-performed urban songs of the past year in the BMI repertoire."

The Jackson Five--brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael, a.k.a. The Jackson 5--formed in 1966; youngest brother Randy replaced Jermaine in 1976, at which time the group parted with Motown Records and was rechristened "The Jacksons." They were the first group to have each of their first four singles hit No. 1, according to BMI.

All of the brothers except for Michael have confirmed their attendance at the upcoming Urban Music Awards, according to the Associated Press.
