Petra, Oak Ridge Boys, Among Eight To Join Gospel Hall Of Fame

The Gospel Music Association will induct eight new members to its Gospel Music Hall of Fame during an Oct. 30 ceremony in Nashville. The honorees will include Petra, the Oak Ridge Boys, Edwin Hawkins Singers, Fisk Jubilee Singers, Roger Breland & Truth, the Kingsmen Quartet, Shirley Caesar and Robert R. “Bob” MacKenzie.

The Oak Ridge Boys, though best known for the hit “Elvira,” have many gospel-tinged tracks. Petra, which debuted in 1974, is considered a pioneer in the Christian rock genre.

Gospel singer Shirley Caesar has recorded 35 albums, and is the winner of several Grammy, Stellar and Dove awards. The Edwin Hawkins Singers are best known for turning the gospel song “Oh Happy Day” into a secular radio hit in the late 1960s.

Robert R. MacKenzie, the only non-performer who will be inducted this year, was the creative director of the John T. Benson Publishing Company, which specializes in gospel releases. He produced nearly every album released by the label in the '60s and ‘70s.

The Fisk Jubilee Singers are an internationally acclaimed group of African-American musicians known for preserving "slave songs,” according to the GMA. The Kingsmen Quartet topped the Southern Gospel chart for 19 moths with the hit “Excuses.”

Roger Breland & Truth is a traveling musical company that performs more than 260 concerts a year. The group has recorded nearly 50 albums, according to the GMA.

Since its founding in 1971, 114 members have been inducted into the GMA's Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
