Jimmy Buffett, Lenny Kravitz, Bon Jovi And Others To Perform At Democratic Fundraiser For Al Gore

A star-studded lineup of musicians will join together in New York City next month for a fundraising concert for the Democratic National Committee, according to event organizer Miramax Films. Dubbed “The Concert,” the event is set to take place at Radio City Music Hall on Sept. 14, and will feature performances by Jimmy Buffett ; Bette Midler ; Crosby, Stills and Nash; Lenny Kravitz ; Sheryl Crow ; Macy Gray; Jon Bon Jovi; and Don Henley, Glenn Frey and Timothy Schmidt performing songs by the Eagles.

Miramax co-chairman Harvey Weinstein, Rolling Stone editor and publisher Jann Wenner and VH1 president John Sykes organized the event to support Gore in his bid for the Presidency.

“The importance of electing Al Gore inspired me to make one last return to the concert production business,” said industry mogul Weinstein in a statement issued by his company. “Al Gore is the only candidate with common sense commitment to protecting health care, education and social security funding, while preserving America’s prosperity.”

“This is an endorsement of Al Gore by artists who clearly stand for definite social and political values,” added Wenner. “Music fans have to recognize that these people, whose work and ideas they admire, are all backing this man.”

“I just like participating in democracy,” said Buffett, the sole musician quoted in the Miramax release. “That might sound corny to people, but I think I’m lucky to be included in things like this that might make people’s lives better.”

Absent from Miramax’s announcement is any mention of Gore’s running mate, Sen. Joseph Lieberman. Lieberman has been a harsh critic of the entertainment industry in recent years--so much so that the head of the Recording Industry Association of America, Hillary Rosen, felt compelled to release a statement commenting on the addition of Lieberman to the Democratic presidential ticket shortly after Gore announced his selection.

"It is true that Senator Lieberman has been particularly critical of the entertainment industry,” said Rosen in her Aug. 7 statement. “Nonetheless, while we have disagreed with him at various times, we share the common goal of doing what is right for America's youth.”

Despite a halting reaction to Lieberman, however, many in the entertainment industry--widely known for its support of the Democratic party in the past--are backing the party’s presidential ticket. At least one artist is admittedly doing so because of his distaste for the alternative.

"I can't tell you how little I want George W. Bush as president," musician David Crosby was quoted as saying in a recent RollingStone.com article that announced the upcoming fundraiser.

Tickets to the Sept. 14 event can be purchased via the Democratic National Committee’s website, or by calling (212) 597-9114. Prices range from $125 to $1,000 dollars.
