Lynyrd Skynyrd keyboardist dead at 56

Lynyrd Skynyrd keyboardist Billy Powell died Tuesday night (1/27), according to the band's official website.

"We will post more info shortly," reads the band's statement. "The family and band request your respect and understanding during this difficult time."

Powell at first was a roadie with the band, but was hired on to be a member of the group in 1972. The Texas native, who reportedly died in his Florida condo, was 56 years old.

Lynyrd Syknyrd was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. With the death of Powell, guitarist Gary Rossington is now the sole member from Lynyrd Skynyrd's heyday who still plays with the band.
