Brian Wilson plots California shows around DVD release

Brian Wilson has lined up a slew of promotional appearances--along with a pair of live shows--this month to support his forthcoming DVD, "That Lucky Old Sun."

The Beach Boys founder will play shows with his full band Jan. 28 in Los Angeles and Jan. 29 in San Diego. Details are below. Additionally, Wilson will appear Thursday night (1/15) at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles as part of the new institution's inaugural "An Evening With" program; Wilson will perform an acoustic set before an audience of 200 people.

On Jan. 30, Wilson will be a featured guest at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, where he'll attend the theatrical premiere of "Going Home," a feature-length documentary about Wilson's return to Capitol Records and the making of his new album.

Wilson's most recent studio album, "That Lucky Old Sun," surfaced last spring. The singer collaborated once again with longtime writing partner Van Dyke Parks and bandmate Scott Bennett. Described by Wilson in a press release as an "interwoven series of 'rounds' with interspersed spoken word," and as an autobiographical travelogue of sorts, the album was recorded at Capitol Studios in Hollywood.

The set--the singer/songwriter's first studio effort since his 2004 re-recording of The Beach Boys' "Smile"--marked Wilson's return to Capitol/EMI, the label that launched The Beach Boys' career with the 1962 hit "Surfin' Safari/409."

Wilson will make several media appearances around Southern California this month related to "Sun" and the Jan. 27 release of his new "That Lucky Old Sun" DVD, which features more than two-and-a-half hours of content, according to a press release, including a full-length performance of the album filmed last May at Capitol Studios. The DVD also includes the "Going Home" documentary.

"I'm thrilled to be back home with Capitol, and I'm looking forward to sharing 'That Lucky Old Sun' with everyone," Wilson said in a press release last year. "This music is really special to me."
